Jean Prouvé: The Tropical Houses

Published to coincide with the 2006 exhibition of the large Brazzaville tropical house on the Port des Champs-Elysées, this catalog details the story of Jean Prouvé’s three tropical houses in an album format, featuring most of the archives on the subject.

A tireless researcher, Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) collaborated with the greatest architects of his time. With his ‘tropical houses,’ he demonstrated that it is possible to industrialize the building sector by producing ‘houses manufactured like automobiles.’ Flown to Africa, these steel and aluminum structures were assembled on-site in two weeks.

Three prototypes were built in Niamey (Niger) and Brazzaville (Congo) in 1949 and 1951. In 2000, gallerist Eric Touchaleaume purchased, dismantled, and repatriated them to France.
