Germaine RICHIER (1904-1959)
Torso I, 1934
Bronze, numbered cast, Susse foundry
108 x 51 x 34 cm
Pedestal carved from a reclaimed block of Cassis stone, evoking an antique block. (Contemporary adaptation)
Torso I, an early work already demonstrating the artist’s maturity, is part of a series of studies for Loretto, a young boy depicted full-length with fine classical craftsmanship from the 1930s, a style embodied by sculptors who enjoyed great renown at the time, such as Belmondo or Despiau.
However, the fragmentary nature inspired by an antique torso appears much less ‘dated’ than the complete figure.
