Richard Baquié was the subject of an exhibition in 2023 at the Friche de l’Escalette in Marseille, Galerie 54’s second exhibition venue. In the 1980s/90s, he frequented the former scrapyard of the Friche de l’Escalette assiduously, in search of spare parts for his sculptures. His complex work, beneath an apparent makeshift quality, is profoundly conceptual yet never dry; it contains the poetry of Marseille, his hometown—its violence and its warmth—and brings to light hidden elements, childhood dreams, a poetics.
