Nana Afia Serwaa Kobi Ampem (1907-2016) was the queen mother (Asantehemaa) of King Otumfoj Opoku ware II.
Through her exceptional longevity and dignity, she represents a major figure of Ashanti institutional continuity, from the colonial Gold Coast to contemporary Ghana, surviving her son the late king by seventeen years.
This hyperrealistic work belongs to a series devoted to the Ashanti monarchy.
The quality of the rendering of the queen’s face, with its serene expression imbued with dignity, testifies to the artist’s sensitivity and dexterity.
