François STAHLY (1911-2006)
Banyan, 1945
Linden
68 x 43 x 33 cm
Provenance: Former collection of Henri-Pierre Roché
Carved from a single, massive trunk that Stahly purchased as a standing tree from farmers in Perche near Mortagne. Subsequently, he purchased three other trunks – an oak, a walnut, and a cherry tree – which, until 1957, provided the material for almost all of his wooden works.
