Metempsychosis or reincarnation of the soul after death into a human body, an animal, or a plant, is a recurring theme in Kwame Akoto’s work, in which he depicts himself with half-human, half-animal features, as with the gorilla in this instance.

This grisaille painting on an exposed plywood background is a rarity in the artist’s body of work.
